Rustic Dutch Oven Lasagna

One of my favourite things to make over the fire is lasagna over the fire in our Dutch oven. It is one of the best hearty meals you’ll ever make while at camp or in your backyard having a fire.

You may think it might require a lot of work, but it really isn’t at all. Now when I make it over the fire I just keep it to the basics, why over do it?

What You Will Need:

Hardware:

Cast Iron Dutch Oven
Tripod to hang your Dutch oven
Firepit

Ingredients:

Oven-ready lasagna noodles
2 lbs of ground beef or pork
1 can of sliced mushrooms
1 white onion
Montreal steak seasoning
Your favourite cheese
Olive Oil
2 jars of pasta sauce

Preparation:

In a skillet, add a little bit of olive oil and start browning your meat. Once that is going good, you can add in your seasoning.

Remember, this is just a basic recipe, but have fun with it. This is just a guideline on how I do it. Next, chop up your onion and drain your can of mushrooms, then add them to your meat you’re cooking.

The last step for this preparation is to add a couple of jars of your favourite pasta sauce. Keeping it basic. Now, if I were bringing this to camp, I would let it cool and freeze the sauce until you need it.

Fire Up:

If you froze the sauce you can let it thaw for a bit until it’s required. Now head on outside and get your fire going.

After you get your fire going you may want to get a good bed of coals going. Before it gets too hot you can set your tripod up and make sure it’s secured.

Now it’s time to fill your Dutch oven up! Now, take a little bit of olive oil and give your Dutch oven a nice coat all around. Take a spoonful of sauce and put it down as your first layer. Then add in your oven-ready lasagna noodles.

On top of that, just more sauce, then add cheese, then noodles. Keep repeating until you reach the top, just make sure the last layer is your cheese.

Now, take your Dutch oven and hang it from your tripod. I usually hang it around 1.5 to 2 feet above the fire.

There is a little bit of variance in cook time here, but I never go longer than 45 minutes. I will check it after about half an hour, then determine from there.

Now, if it’s almost done, I would take some coals from the fire and put them on the top lid of the Dutch oven to brown that top layer of cheese.

Once it’s browned, you can remove the oven from the fire and let it sit for a few minutes before serving. This lasagna is always changing with me, and it’s just something really fun and different to do over the fire. Plus, it’s not overly difficult to do.
